Partial Differential Equations in Industry and Engineering

PRESENTATION OF THE ALFA PROGRAM AND OF OUR NETWORK: Partial Differential Equations in Industry and Engineering (PDEINET):

ALFA (América Latina - Formación Académica) is a program of co-operation between higher education institutions of the European Union and Latin America. Participant countries are the 15 Member States of the European Union and the following 18 countries of Latin America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The principal ALFA objectives are:
 

1. To encourage scientific, academic, and technological cooperation between Latin America and Europe in the field of higher education.
2. To promote cooperation programmes through networks of higher European and Latin American educational institutions in the realization of joint academic activities as well as in postgraduate and university student mobility.

Description of our Network (PDEINET):

Our network is composed of a number of institutions in Europe and Latin-America with the firm commitment to research and education. The local coordinators and participants are interested in the application of partial differential equations to industry and engineering. Our proposal focus on the idea that the training graduate students (doctoral and master) is best accomplished by the actual participation of the students in a research program developed by the host institution. In this way, we find it crucial that the candidate have a precise work-plan as well as a researcher who would be his/her mentor in the host institution. The participation of the student in the program should collaborate to strengthen existing collaborations as well as opening new research and educational avenues.

Activities:

Our project is centered on two main activities:

• Short term visits (up to 3 months) of  Ph.D. (or M.Sc.) students from one participating institution to another one. See the planned activities bellow.
• The professor's and tutor's meetings. The first one will take place as the Special Session entitled PDEs in Industry and Engineering during the 24^o Colóquio Brasileiro de Matemática.This will take place during the period July 27th through August 1st, 2003. We plan to have a maximum of 12 speakers. Please let us know as soon as possible if you will be able to participate.We will need a title and abstract of your talk. We will also ask you to submit, copy of your slides or lecture notes after your talk. We will be able to fund (according to the guidelines set forth by ALFA) one professor or tutor from each participating institution. This means that our project will be able to pay (up to about) 72% of the airfare and per-diems. The remaining 28% should be co-financed by the participant's grant (for those happy enough to be unfamiliar with the infamous neologism co-finance please send us an e-mail).
