Scholarships and Fellowships

To achieve better results in Graduate and Post-Graduate Programs, candidates admitted to IMPA are encouraged to begin their study programs during the summer term. This is why IMPA gives these candidates preference when distributing scholarships for the summer months of January and February.

Scholarships for the Summer Program

IMPA offers a limited number of two-month scholarships for the summer term. Scholarship applications for this term should be sent to IMPA by November 20th.

Scholarships for Scientific Initiation Program

The Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) - (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) awards Scientific Initiation Scholarships to outstanding academic students through quotas requested by members of the faculty. Scientific Initiation scholarship students are required to take at least one course or participate in a project together with their advisors. Additional information on scholarships is available at the Graduate Admissions Office.

Master’s and Doctoral Fellowships

Master’s and Doctoral Fellowships are awarded by CNPq and by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) (Committee for the Betterment of Graduate Students). The fellowships are granted on a yearly basis, as of the first of March.

The institutions concerned require that candidates be first admitted to a program and establish a deadline for fellowship applications. Therefore candidates for graduate study fellowships should apply for admission at IMPA by November 10th. Late applicants may be considered, depending on the case.

Master’s and Doctoral Fellowships for African and Latin American Students

Special attention should be given to the PEC-PG program deadline that requires admission to IMPA by June so that Fellowships can begin in March of the following year.
