EXPERIENCE

1971-1974 Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, School of Sciences, University of Buenos Aires. Taught courses on Linear Algebra, Calculus and General Topology.

1972-1974 Research Assistant at the Department of Mathematics, School of Sciences, University of Buenos Aires. Worked on Infinite Abelian Groups under the direction of Dr. Enzo Gentile (1972-1973) and on algorithms alternative to SIMPLEX for Linear Programming under the direction of Dr. Hugo Scolnik (1973-1974).

1974-1976 Researcher at the National Institute for Hydrological Science and Technology (INCYTH), Buenos Aires. Worked on optimal operation of hydroelectrical power plants. Formulated and implemented a dynamic programming model for the optimal operation of a pumping-storage power plant in Córdoba, Argentina.

1976-1977 Assistant professor (part time) at the Department of Mathematics, School of Sciences, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), México City. Taught courses on Calculus and Complex Variables.

1976-1977 Researcher at the Institute of Engineering, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), México City. Worked on optimal design of cooling systems for power plants. Formulated and implemented models of thermal pollution (Manzanillo power plant), optimal size and shape of cooling ponds (Piedras Negras coal fired power plant) and thermal diffusion in shallow sea water (Punta Prieta power plant).

1977-1981 Research Assistant at the Operations Research Department, Stanford University, under the direction of Dr. George Dantzig. Worked on the formulation and implementation of the PILOT system, a set of intertemporal dynamic linear programming models, designed for policy analysis in the areas of energy-economy interaction, technological substitution in the energy sector and energy conservation in the U.S., with a time horizon of 40 years. Worked on the Coal Module of PILOT, the Consumers Energy Services Module (CESM), the Industrial Energy Services Module (IESM), and the Pilot Process Integrated Model (PPIM). Run specific policy studies with the PILOT system for the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Palo Alto.

1981-1983 Formulation and data gathering for a model of industrial energy demand in Brazil, developed at the Social and Economic Planning Institute (IPEA), Rio de Janeiro.

1983-1985 Formulation and implementation of the Brazilian Module of the Global Trade Model (GTM), developed by the Forest Sector Project of the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria. Coordination of the Latin American Module of the same model.

1981- Researcher at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Rio de Janeiro. Taught courses on Linear Programming, Nonlinear Programming, Stochastic Processses, Introduction to Operations Research, Reliability Theory, Dynamic Programming, Combinatorial Optimization, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Linear Complementarity Problems and Interior Point Methods for Convex Programming. Coordinated, since 1992, the Optimization Seminar at IMPA. Worked on iterative algorithms for large linear and nonlinear systems of equations and inequalities, large scale linearly constrained optimization problems and linear complementarity problems. Developed new generalized proximal point methods for convex optimization, nonlinear complementarity problems and variational inequalities. Special emphasis has been given to algorithms applicable to image reconstruction, particularly for computerized transmission tomography and positron emission tomography (PET). Organized workshops on Computational Complexity (January 1990), Mathematical Aspects of Image Processing and Computer Vision (January 1990) and Iterative Methods for Inverse Problems (January 1992).
