I am a professor at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics,
IMPA, in Rio de Janeiro. Also, I am the head of the Department for Computer
Activities at IMPA.
I took my Phd in Mathematics in 1984, at IMPA in the
area of Riemannian Geometry. My advisor was Prof. Manfredo P. do
Carmo. I worked as the R&D manager of the graphics team at Globo
Television Network from 1984 to 1988. I started the computer graphics research
lab at IMPA in 1990 (Visgraf Lab).
This is a research and development Lab that supports a graduate program
in computer graphics.
I have published several books
and research
articles in the area of computer graphics. I have organized four
SIGGRAPH courses: ``Modeling in Graphics'' at SIGGRAPH '93, ``Warping
and Morphing of Graphical Objects'' at SIGGRAPH '94 and SIGGRAPH
'97, and I was a co-organizer of the course "From Fourier Analysis to Wavelets"
in SIGGRAPH '98 and 99'. I have also organized several courses at
the Brazilian Mathematical Colloquium and at the Brazilian Symposium of
Computer Graphics and Image Processing.
My current research interests include Computer Graphics,
Vision and Image Processing. Also I am very interested in Information Technology
and Distance Learning.
I am the Chief editor of the book series Série
de Computação e Matemática. This series publishes
books in portuguese language that covers both the use of computers in mathematics,
and the use of mathematical models in computer science.
I am a Member of the editorial board of Matemática
Universitária and of Projeto Euclides. Two traditional publishing
projects from IMPA, covering mathematics in the undergraduate and graduate
levels.
I am a member of the Brazilian
Academy of Sciences. Also, I am a member of SIGGRAPH
(Special Interest Group in Computer Graphics of the ACM),
SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) and SBM
(Brazilian Mathematical Society).
